I watched the Republican Party Presidential debate on May 5, 2011, and when asked 3 out of 5 candidates said they would support the use of "water-boarding" as defined as torture to be used by the USA, and Representative Ron Paul did say "no" but only because he said the harsh treatment does not work. The thing about "harsh interrogations" by any name is that it gives the immoral torturers their false feelings of strength when such actions are really weakness based in fear. Benjamin Franklin said: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." So to mistreat prisoners in order to be safer is to deserve neither liberty nor safety. Another relevant maxim is that: "Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once." So as the USA grope search passengers, start wars based on fear and lies, bomb houses with drone aircraft, and torture prisoners, and more, then these are examples of a thousand deaths where our Country is failing to be brave or valiant. I do not believe the immoral cowardice is only in the Republican Party but they do have the only candidates who openly express their support for their fear driven and false strength policy to torture prisoners.

The ugliest thing about the ongoing attempt at justifying the water-boarding and other harsh interrogation methods is that this is an example of the dangers of a democracy. The people become driven by base emotions along with their leaders lacking proper principles and a large segment of the democracy becomes like a lynch-mob where the prisoners are denied legal and human rights which the popular fear chooses to disrespect. Not just torture but just the harsh treatments are illegal under international laws, and it is illegal under the U.S. Constitution 8th Amendment which declares: Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. Some people argue that our 8th Amendment only concerns within the USA and not for Al Qaeda prisoners but our founding fathers did not give that interpretation. We claim to be a Country of laws but the lynch-mob mentality is a never ending reality in our Country with ugly roots here-in and it needs to be stopped. It appears that the President Obama administration has stopped the use of torture but they never truly denounce it. While the Republicans apparently want to bring back the full use of water-boarding and other harsh treatment as their US doctrine of their fear over ruling the laws of restraint. This is what happens in a society where too many are driven by fear and lacking the morality along with weak and pampered leaders who will use the tools of cowardice and injustice in their efforts to take and to satisfy their vain intentions, and it needs to be resisted and stopped.
